High on a hill overlooking Lyon, Fort de Loyasse stands sentinel. It whispers tales of a city bracing for war. Built between 1836 and 1840, Fort de Loyasse became part of Lyon’s first line of defense. The July Revolution had sparked fears of an Austrian invasion. The fort, along with Fort de Vaise, replaced the old walls of La Py. They stood ready to repel any attack from the east. Can you picture the soldiers stationed here? They scanned the horizon, their smooth-bore cannons capable of reaching targets 1,200 meters away. The fort’s design, with its two stacked platforms, offered strategic advantages. The lower level boasted three bastions. The upper level had two bastions and a cavalier. Between these levels, barracks housed the troops. Storerooms held supplies, and a gunpowder magazine lay hidden within. But time and technology marched on. Rifled cannons with a 2,500-meter range made the fort’s smooth-bore guns obsolete. The invention of melinite, a powerful explosive, sealed its fate. Fort de Loyasse then played a different role in history. During World War I, it housed prisoners of war. In World War II, German forces occupied its walls. Finally, in 1947, the fort was decommissioned. The city of Lyon purchased the land in 1949. The moats became storage for the roads department. Allotment gardens bloomed on the glacis. For a time, even mushrooms sprouted in the fort’s underground galleries. A barracks met its end in the 1960s. It was demolished to widen Montée de l’Observance. The fort’s trenches were also partially filled to make way for a boulevard. This new road connected the Observance district to Vaise in 1961. Today, Fort de Loyasse stands as a silent witness to Lyon’s past. It has seen revolution, war, and peace. It has served as a fortress, a prison, a storehouse, and a garden. Its story, etched in stone and soil, reminds us of the ever-changing tides of history.
