Guiding ships safely into Penang Harbour since 1882, the Fort Cornwallis Lighthouse stands as a beacon of maritime history. It is more than just a light. The lighthouse is a sentinel that has witnessed countless arrivals and departures. Let’s explore its story.

This 21-metre tall white steel framework wasn’t always called the Fort Cornwallis Lighthouse. Originally, it was named Fort Point Lighthouse. The British Malaya government constructed it. They spent £10,224.

In the early 20th century between 1914 and 1928 the lighthouse was renovated. With renovations came a new name. It became the Penang Harbour Lighthouse.

The Fort Cornwallis Lighthouse is the second oldest in Malaysia. Only the Cape Rachado Lighthouse is older. But this lighthouse has a special distinction. It resembles a ship’s mast. Also, it’s unique as the only one in Peninsular Malaysia that doesn’t serve any navigational purpose today.

Imagine mail ships of old arriving. The Fort Cornwallis Lighthouse signaled their approach. It played a vital role in the region’s communication.

The light has a range of 16 nautical miles. That is about 30 kilometers. It flashes red every two seconds. This helps ships navigate safely.

Fort Cornwallis itself is rich in history. Captain Francis Light landed here in 1786. The fort defended the region. Indian convict laborers rebuilt it with brick and stone.

The fort never saw combat. However, it served administrative functions. The Supreme Court of Penang even opened here in 1808.

As you stand here, admire the lighthouse. Consider its role in Penang’s past. It represents maritime heritage. It connects us to a time when the sea was the main highway. This is a place where stories of trade and travel unfolded.

The Fort Cornwallis Lighthouse is a testament to Penang’s history. It stands tall. The lighthouse symbolizes guidance and connection. It is a reminder of Penang’s enduring link to the sea.
