A forbidden spring whispers secrets. This is Fort Canning Park. Its history stretches back centuries. It was once Bukit Larangan the Forbidden Hill. Ancient Malay kings were believed to be buried here. The hill was considered sacred. Few locals dared to venture here. Stories of ghosts and spirits abounded.

Fort Canning Park wasn’t always a park. In the 14th century a palace stood here. Its ruins were still visible in 1821. Sir Stamford Raffles built a bungalow on the hill. It became the residence of colonial governors. Later in the 1850s Fort Canning was built. The fort was never used in battle. It was demolished in 1907. Only two cannons and a gothic archway remain.

Imagine Raffles’ bungalow a wooden structure 100 feet long and 50 feet wide. It had Venetian blinds and an attap roof. Raffles loved the view. He wanted to be buried here among the Malay kings. His home became Government House. The first Botanic Gardens were established on the hill’s slopes. A flagstaff signaled ships’ arrival. A time ball dropped daily like a giant alarm clock. Lightning splintered the flagstaff in 1850.

A Christian cemetery was established on the hill. Europeans were buried there from 1819 to 1865. The cemetery was moved several times. Most headstones are now at St Gregory’s Armenian Church. Some remain at Fort Canning Park. The gothic gateways are still there. They were built by Captain Charles Edward Faber.

In 1972 the area became Central Park. It included King George V Park and land used by the British Armed Forces. There was a National Theatre a Van Kleef Aquarium. There was even a roller-skating rink. In 1981 it was renamed Fort Canning Park. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted a fruit tree to mark the occasion.

Today Fort Canning Park is a lively place. It hosts concerts theatre productions and festivals. It is also a popular place for weddings parties and gatherings. New features are being added. Three historical gardens are being recreated. There will be a heritage gallery. The Forbidden Spring will be recreated. Fort Canning Park continues to tell its stories. It blends history nature and modern life. Explore its many layers. Discover its secrets. It’s a place of history mystery and wonder. A place that continues to captivate.
