Have you ever sought refuge in a secret garden? Welcome to the Forstbotanisk Have. This isn’t just any park. It’s a historical haven a testament to nature’s resilience and human ingenuity. Founded in 1838 the Forstbotanisk Have initially served as a training ground for botanists at the University of Copenhagen. Imagine young students poring over specimens learning the intricacies of the plant kingdom. This small 3.5 hectare haven boasts over 600 species of trees and shrubs. Many have bravely battled the harsh Danish climate. The Forstbotanisk Have’s unique collection has immeasurable value for both fundamental research and practical applications in landscaping and gardening.

For many years the Forstbotanisk Have was overseen by Carl Syrach Larsen. His father was a gardener here. During the German occupation of Denmark Carl cleverly used the garden as a hiding place. In 1945 he even sheltered a pilot Roy Maddock-Lyon in the estate’s well house before his escape to Sweden. This act of bravery showcases the Forstbotanisk Have’s quiet role in a tumultuous period of history.

Since 1970 the garden’s maintenance has been more relaxed. It increasingly resembles a natural woodland. This is partly because biologists from the University of Copenhagen increasingly used the Hørsholm Arboretum for teaching and research. In 2008 responsibility for maintaining the Forstbotanisk Have transferred to the Danish Nature Agency. Now the land is rented from the state and managed by Gentofte Municipality.

Today the Forstbotanisk Have stands as a symbol of enduring nature. Its trees and plants continue to thrive. They are a constant reminder of the rich past that it holds. It’s a place where history blends seamlessly with nature inviting exploration and reflection. Free to the public it’s a quiet escape a sanctuary of green offering peace and historical intrigue. Enjoy your time in the Forstbotanisk Have. Let the stories of the past whisper through the leaves.
