This church, established in Forney in 1893, wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a beacon of community spirit, a testament to the dreams and dedication of its founders. Forney Church of Christ emerged from the unwavering vision of John W. Walker. He championed “Christian Union” and brought prominent ministers to Forney for revival meetings. These gatherings, though initially aimed at uniting different religious groups, eventually led to the formation of the Forney Church of Christ. The first structure, built in 1892 on Houston and Border Streets, served the growing congregation for 25 years. The church’s story is rich with prominent figures like Elders Polly, Stirman, Caskey, Setliff, and B.B. Sanders. They shaped the church’s early identity and paved the way for its future growth. In 1916, under the guidance of Dr. E.R. Cockrell, the congregation embarked on an ambitious project. They built a new brick edifice, a symbol of their enduring faith. This building, completed around May 1917, marked a significant milestone. It was the first brick church in Forney, a testament to the congregation’s commitment and vision. The Forney Church of Christ also played a vital role in supporting missionary work. They supported E.T. Cornelius in Mexico and later J.F. Heugal, reflecting their dedication to spreading their faith beyond their local community. The church thrived for several decades. The red brick building stood as a proud landmark. However, over time, the congregation dwindled, and the church eventually closed its doors. The building was later purchased by the First Baptist Church, eventually dismantled to make way for a parking lot. The stained-glass windows, remnants of the Forney Church of Christ’s legacy, found a new home in the First Baptist Church sanctuary. Though the physical structure is gone, the Forney Church of Christ’s story echoes through Forney’s history. It speaks of a community’s faith, its aspirations, and the enduring power of shared belief.
