Before you stands the University of Greenwich. It is more than just bricks and mortar. The University of Greenwich is a story of transformation and ambition.
Let’s journey back to 1890. This was when Woolwich Polytechnic was born. It was the second polytechnic in the United Kingdom. Imagine a place buzzing with eager minds. They are hungry for technical skills. Quintin Hogg and other visionaries believed in accessible education. They laid the foundation for this institution.
Woolwich Polytechnic quickly became vital. It focused on higher technical education. This focus suited its location near Woolwich Dockyard and the Royal Arsenal. William Anderson was director-general of the Ordnance Factories. He served as a trustee. Later, he became a governor.
Time jumps to 1970. Woolwich Polytechnic merged. It joined part of Hammersmith College of Art and Building. This merger formed Thames Polytechnic. The institution grew. Dartford College joined in 1976. Avery Hill College of Education joined in 1985. Garnett College joined in 1987. Parts of Goldsmiths College and the City of London College were added in 1988.
Then, in 1992, a significant change occurred. Thames Polytechnic gained university status. In 1993, it was renamed the University of Greenwich. On January 1, 1993, the Thames College of Health Care Studies officially merged with the university. It became a full faculty.
In 1996, the Natural Resources Institute joined the university. The NRI was formerly a UK government research agency. The University of Greenwich continued to evolve.
In 2001, the university relocated its main campus. It moved from Woolwich to Greenwich. The Old Royal Naval College became its primary home. This move signified a new chapter.
