Could a building have a more dramatic journey than the former Takapuna Boating Clubhouse? This grand, white structure, now sadly showing its age, stands as a testament to the spirit of Auckland’s boating community. The former Takapuna Boating Clubhouse began its life far from the shores of Takapuna Beach. In 1923, the growing Takapuna Boating Club, originally formed in Bayswater in 1920, needed a clubhouse. They found a solution in the form of Ireland’s Tannery buildings in Panmure. Imagine dismantling a large tannery building piece by piece. Club members formed demolition parties, traveling to Panmure for four weekends. They worked during the day and camped at night. After four weeks of dedicated work, the tannery was carefully stacked onto a pontoon. The Auckland Launch and Towboat Company then towed this floating jigsaw puzzle across the harbor to Bayswater. The journey, a mere half-hour drive today, took two trips and about three days in 1922. Once in Bayswater, the former tannery was painstakingly reassembled, becoming the Takapuna Boating Clubhouse in 1925. The clubhouse wasn’t just for yachting. It hosted dances, boxing matches, a library, school events, ladies’ mornings, and even roller skating. It became a true community hub. The clubhouse witnessed the evolution of sailing in New Zealand. It was instrumental in the creation of the Cornwall Cup and the formation of both the Z Class and Finn Class. The clubhouse’s location in Bayswater, however, eventually proved unsuitable for the newer, larger dinghies. In 1969, racing moved to the more spacious waters off Takapuna Beach. The clubhouse remained in Bayswater until the marina was built beside it in 2000. The former Takapuna Boating Clubhouse, a silent observer of Shoal Bay, reminds us of the dedication and ingenuity of the Takapuna Boating Club. This iconic structure, with its history etched into its weathered facade, stands as a symbol of community spirit and the enduring love of watersports.
