Built in 1915 by Swanson Bros, the Former Substation stands before us as a testament to Melbourne’s electric railway history. This striking red brick and render building, in the Renaissance style, dominates the Park Street streetscape. The Former Substation played a vital role in Melbourne’s early 20th-century electric railway system. Originally part of a network of substations, it converted 20,000v AC power from the Newport Power Station to 1,500v DC. This DC power then fed the overhead wires powering the trains. Imagine the hum of the rotary converters within these walls, tirelessly working to keep Melbourne’s trams moving. The Former Substation served this critical function until a modernization program in 1949 began replacing these rotary converters with mercury arc rectifier units. The adjacent Royal Park to Clifton Hill railway line, once served by this substation, eventually closed in 1981. The Former Substation’s importance goes beyond its function. Its architectural significance is undeniable. This grand structure showcases early 20th-century industrial architecture. Its prominent design reflects the vital role railways played in Melbourne’s development. Stepping inside, one can still sense the grandeur of the former machine hall, a dramatic space filled with natural light from large north-facing windows. This impressive space has remarkably retained its original feel despite redevelopment. The Former Substation now serves the community as Casa Elda Vaccari Hostel, offering a new purpose while preserving a piece of Melbourne’s rich history.
