Closed in 2020 Guerin Prep stands silent. Its story however echoes. This wasn’t just any high school. It was a place of legacy. A place where history unfolded brick by brick.
Guerin Prep began in 1962 as Mother Theodore Guerin High School. An all-girls school founded by the Sisters of Providence. They named it after their foundress Mother Theodore Guérin. Imagine the dedication the nuns poured into this all-girls school.
Then in 2004 everything changed. The school became co-educational. It merged with the nearby all-boys Holy Cross High School. This brought a new dynamic to Guerin Prep. The school gained a rich history from two institutions. New traditions and rivalries blended into one.
For years Guerin Prep thrived. Students excelled. The athletic teams the Crusaders and Gators achieved remarkable success. They won regional championships in basketball baseball softball and volleyball. The wrestling team even reached state finals. Think of the pride the students felt. The spirit of competition and teamwork.
But time marches on. Declining enrollment financial struggles and fundraising shortfalls led to its closure. The final school year ended in 2020. This left a void in the community. A loss felt by generations of alumni.
Today the building is gone. Demolished. Only memories remain. Memories of games won and lost friendships formed and lessons learned. One element however remains. A magnificent mosaic. Our Lady of River Grove. Eighteen and a half feet tall it stands as a testament to Guerin Prep’s rich history. A symbol of faith hope and community. It is a symbol that will hopefully live on. It serves as a tribute to a school that once stood tall. A school that touched countless lives.
