Was this imposing structure always here? Many visitors ask this question when standing before the Former Emptor Distillation Plant. Looming 97 feet high, the Former Emptor Distillation Plant has been a landmark in Springvale since 1943. During World War II, Australia’s access to vital chemical imports was severely restricted. The Former Emptor Distillation Plant was built in response to this wartime necessity. This impressive facility extracted resins, turpentine, acetates, oil, and tars from waste timber products. It played a crucial role in supporting Australia’s wartime needs. Today, while the tower stands empty, a testament to a bygone era, the ground floor bustles with life. It houses an air conditioning retail showroom and warehouse, blending the past and present.
