Did the walls of the Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai have ears? They certainly witnessed a lot. Just imagine, in 1873, this grand Renaissance Revival structure rose from the ashes of its predecessor, a consulate lost to fire. The Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai, right here, became a symbol of British influence in Shanghai. It’s actually two buildings cleverly disguised as one. The Bund-facing side housed the consulate offices and the British Supreme Court for China and Japan. Around the corner, on Yuanmingyuan Road, a separate entrance led to the court building itself. The main courtroom presided on the second floor. In 1913, the Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai expanded. New wings were added, accommodating more courtrooms and consular offices. The total area sprawled across an impressive 38,559 square meters. The compound also included the consul-general’s residence and the old Union Church. The Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai stood as a witness to history, surviving conflicts and changing times. In 1941, the Japanese occupation forced its closure. After the war, it reopened, only to close again in 1949 with the communist takeover. The Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai briefly returned in 1954 before closing its doors once more during the Cultural Revolution in 1967. After a period of abandonment and decay, the Shanghai government revitalized the area in the mid-2000s. Today, the Former Consulate-General of the United Kingdom, Shanghai is part of the 33 Waitanyuan complex, a vibrant hub for entertainment and dining, managed by the Peninsula Hotel group. The ghosts of judges, consuls, and diplomats may be gone, but their stories linger in the stones of this historic landmark.
