In 1910 a group of devout Christians sought a place to worship. They found it in an old schoolhouse east of Memphis. This humble beginning marked the birth of Forest Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Forest Hill. A name that would soon resonate with faith and community.
Initially people of all denominations gathered. They sat at desks singing hymns and studying the Bible. Mrs Dorothy Short a founding member recalled the crowded schoolhouse. There was no church for white people of any denomination she remembered. The school board generously allowed services there.
On August 9 1910 they formally adopted the Philadelphia Baptist Confession of Faith. Reverend J W Lee and Reverend R J Greenoe presided. Ten charter members officially formed Forest Hill. Their names Mrs Bessie H Jefferies Mr E E Strong and others are etched in history. Forest Hill grew. Love flowed freely.
When the schoolhouse was moved the congregation raised funds. They held events like ice cream socials and plays. They demonstrated remarkable fundraising skills. This reflects the strong bond within the community. Their efforts secured the old schoolhouse. It became their first church building.
In 1925 a new building was constructed on Forest Hill Road. Mr and Mrs C M Scott donated the land. The new structure boasted a sanctuary classrooms and even running water. It was a significant upgrade. It accommodated the growing congregation. Services were often held outside under the shade of trees. Baptisms took place in the nearby Wolf River.
One unique feature was a hidden baptistery. Located beneath the pulpit it was a discreet site of many baptisms. The church served not only as a religious center but also a social hub for the small town. Forest Hill provided support and community spirit.
Through the years improvements and additions were made. Twenty-eight pastors served the church. Members contributed in many ways. Miss Clara Skinner arranging flowers each Sunday morning is a cherished memory. A parsonage was built in 1952 a sign of continued growth and stability. The Forest Hill Baptist Church Forester a weekly newspaper emerged.
In 1999 Forest Hill relocated to a magnificent white-steepled building. A bible was placed under the pulpit in the main sanctuary. A stained glass panel commemorated their motto Where Love Flows from the Heart. The move was a big step. It is a testament to their enduring faith.
In 2013 Forest Hill faced challenges. The church decided to partner with Harvest a non-denominational ministry. This collaborative approach proved successful. Harvest launched in 2014 drawing 500 people exceeding all expectations. This partnership enabled Forest Hill to continue its mission work.
Today Forest Hill Missionary Baptist Church remains a strong community. They continue their commitment to service and faith. The legacy of love compassion and devotion continues. Forest Hill a testament to enduring faith a beacon of hope in Dallas. Their story continues to inspire.
