Foon Yew High School isn’t just a school. It’s the largest Chinese independent high school in Malaysia. Its legacy is woven into the fabric of Johor Bahru. Its sprawling campus is a significant landmark. It originally started as a primary school.
Imagine the challenges faced during World War II. The school suffered severe damage and was forced to close. Yet after the war it was rebuilt by Shi Liandui. That’s an incredible display of dedication. The school didn’t just survive it thrived.
In 1951 Foon Yew High School was established. The founders’ vision expanded. They extended Chinese education to a higher level. By 1963 student numbers had swelled to 1500. An entrance exam was introduced in 1980. This reflected the school’s growing prominence.
Foon Yew High School’s success story continues. A branch opened in Kulai in 2005. The Kulai branch celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015. Another branch followed in Masai in 2021. Today thousands of students attend its three campuses.
Notable alumni have enriched the school’s reputation. Penny Tai a celebrated Mandopop singer is a proud alumna. So is Dr Boo Cheng Hau a Johor state assemblyman.
