“Singapore is one of those places that few people aim to spend time in for its own attractions”. That’s quite the statement. But let’s see if Even here somewhere can defy that sentiment. Even here somewhere might just be the hidden gem that changes your mind about Singapore.

Even here somewhere offers something unique. It’s a chance to discover something beyond the typical tourist spots. It is a place that encourages a different perspective on this vibrant city.

Nowhere is that see to better effect than in its hawkers markets where former street sellers are banded together. They provide a one-stop opportunity for gorging at little or no cost. There are tons of the things dotted all over the city. You can find them from the food courts in the towering shopping malls to the famous markets of Newton and Maxwell Rd.

Consider this: you could begin your day with a 5 am call to prayer from the Sultan Mosque. It is close to a quirky little backpacker’s accommodation in Arab St. Then, head off on a long walk down to Chinatown. Find the nearby Maxwell St Food Market for an extended breakfast.

You really are spoiled for choice there. Spend half an hour wandering around the stalls. Get barked at by the owners until you decide to try two local specialities. The first is a plate of black carrot cake. It is made from turnip tossed with garlic and egg. The other is curry puffs. They are filled with sardine and egg and served piping hot from the oven.

The cocktail scene has gone from barely adequate to actively disgusting so far. You might begin to despair of ever getting a drink. You want one that is not one of the local strong but gassy beers. However, a bit of research might find you at No1 Rochester Park. It is a collective of high-end restaurants in an old colonial mansion. It is a few stops away on the efficient MRT.

Of course, if you want to have a drink in Singapore, the one place you have to head to is The Long Bar at Raffles. Of course, it’s horribly overpriced and touristy. And of course, the famous Singapore Sling is a disgusting concoction. It is suitable only for white mini-skirted girlies out on a Saturday night in Leeds city centre. But, for all that, sitting in the panelled room on wicker chairs is fun. You nonchalantly discard the shells of roasted peanuts piled in bowls on each table. This is as agreeable a way to pass the last night in Singapore as any.

So, next time you find yourself in Singapore, remember Even here somewhere. It might just lead you to an unexpected adventure. It could open your eyes to a side of Singapore you never knew existed. Go beyond the usual. Explore something different. Discover the essence of Singapore that many miss. Even here somewhere is waiting to be explored.
