The rhythmic clang of a gong echoes across Geylang East Avenue. This is Foo Hai Ch’an Monastery.

Foo Hai Ch’an Monastery a significant Buddhist monastery stands proudly in Singapore. Founded in 1935 by Venerable Hong Zong from Taiwan its history is rich with spiritual devotion. The current abbot Venerable Shi Ming Yi guides the monastery.

Venerable Hong Zong a Japan-ordained monk sought to spread Buddhism throughout Singapore. He established Foo Hai Ch’an Monastery a place of peace and learning. The monastery isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to faith and perseverance. It expanded significantly. It even managed wards of Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Fundraising concerts featuring famous Asian singers helped support this growth.

The monastery’s architecture is breathtaking. Its Zen style is captivating. You’ll see stunning statues. You’ll see a sacred Bodhi tree. The two vajra warriors General Heng and Ha stand guard at the entrance. These powerful figures are a fascinating blend of Buddhist and Taoist influences.

The main building houses a majestic 3.3-meter Buddha statue. A towering 9.9-meter Guanyin statue stands nearby. Guanyin the bodhisattva of compassion represents enlightenment and mercy. The five-story pagoda built in 2004 is another highlight. It contains sacred Buddha relics. Each floor holds beautifully decorated Buddha statues. This pagoda is a gift from the Siddhartha Centre. It reflects generosity and devotion.

The monastery isn’t without its challenges. In 2007 Abbot Shi Ming Yi faced accusations of misappropriating funds. He served time in prison before returning to his duties. He implemented stricter financial controls. He learned from past mistakes.

Foo Hai Ch’an Monastery is more than a building. It’s a living community. A place of profound spirituality. A place where history devotion and resilience intertwine. Take a moment to breathe in the peace. Let the tranquility of Foo Hai Ch’an Monastery wash over you. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and inspired.
