Marvelous isn’t it? The Fonte do Neptuno. Right here in the heart of Lisbon. This magnificent fountain boasts a history as rich and swirling as the waters it contains.

The Neptune fountain’s centerpiece is a stunning 18th-century Carrara marble sculpture. Created by the masterful hand of Machado de Castro it depicts the god of the seas. Neptune stands proudly holding his trident. He is perched atop a shell balanced on two playful dolphins.

Before finding its home here in Largo de Dona Estefania in 1951 this magnificent statue had quite the journey. It once graced the Chafariz do Loreto in Chiado. After that fountain’s demolition it traveled. It found temporary homes at the Mãe de Água the Museu do Carmo and the Barbadinhos water depot. It even spent time in Praça do Chile.

This isn’t just a pretty face though. The Fonte do Neptuno is carefully designed. The statue sits in the center of a circular fountain. Water cascades down into a lower basin creating a mesmerizing display. Submerged projectors illuminate the water. This creates a magical effect that highlights the statue itself. Fine sprays of water complete the scene. It’s truly a feast for the eyes and ears.

So next time you find yourself in Lisbon take a moment to admire the Fonte do Neptuno. Let the cool spray of water refresh you. Allow yourself to be transported back in time. This isn’t just a fountain. It’s a testament to Lisbon’s rich history and artistic heritage a captivating piece of the city’s soul.
