This fountain, built in 1589, holds a story as refreshing as its waters. The Fontana di piazza dell’Aracoeli is a work of the early Renaissance, a testament to the artistic spirit that was sweeping through Rome. Envisioned by the renowned architect Giacomo della Porta and brought to life by skilled craftsmen, the fountain was a gift from Pope Sixtus V. Look closely at the cherubic figures adorning the fountain. These playful putti, each holding an amphora, were sculpted by Andrea Brasca. They stand with their backs to each other, seemingly oblivious to the world as they pour water into the basin below. The Pope’s family emblem, the Trimontium, is proudly displayed between them. Over the centuries, the Fontana di piazza dell’Aracoeli has seen its fair share of changes. Originally, it stood on an elegant pedestal of two steps.
