Why is that old man lounging around up there? Doesn’t he know this is the elegant Fontana del Sebeto, not some rustic grotto? Well, my friends, let me tell you, that’s no ordinary fellow. This grand fountain we see before us, the Fontana del Sebeto, takes its name from the Sebeto River, a once mighty waterway that flowed through the heart of ancient Neapolis. That old man embodies the river itself! This stunning Baroque masterpiece, commissioned in 1635 by the Viceroy Emanuele Zunica e Fonseca, is a testament to Naples’ rich history. The Fontana del Sebeto originally graced the top of Via Cesario Console but found its new home here in 1939. Notice the exquisite details – the Tritons flanking the old man, each clutching a conch shell that spills water into the basins below. Look closely and you’ll spot the coats of arms of the powerful – the King of Spain, the Viceroy, and, of course, the magnificent city of Naples itself. The Fontana del Sebeto is a symphony of art and history, a reminder of the enduring bond between Naples and its watery past.
