Have you ever heard of a fountain that moved more than most people? The Fontana del Gigante, right here before us, is one such nomad! You might be surprised to learn that this grand fountain, with its intricate carvings and imposing arches, has graced not one, not two, but four different locations throughout its lifetime. The Fontana del Gigante, or “Fountain of the Giant,” earned its name from its original placement next to the Royal Palace of Naples. Here, it stood near a colossal statue known as “Il Gigante”—the Giant—a magnificent piece sculpted from a Roman-era bust thought to depict Jupiter. For a time, the fountain basked in the grandeur of the palace, its presence immortalized in paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. However, like many historical monuments, the Fontana del Gigante wasn’t immune to the whims of urban planning. In the 19th century, it embarked on a series of relocations. First, it was moved near the bustling Port of Naples, then to a peaceful park, only to find itself surrounded by the encroaching grime of port warehouses. But every story has a happy ending, and for the Fontana del Gigante, it found its peace here on the scenic waterfront near Castel dell’Ovo. Here, overlooking the sparkling Gulf of Naples, it stands as a testament not only to its creators’ artistry but also to its own enduring journey through the heart of Naples.
