Hidden within the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Medici Fountain whispers tales of powerful women and Italian artistry. Catherine de Medici, yearning for her Florentine home, envisioned a fountain reminiscent of the Boboli Gardens. Around 1630, this vision materialized, thanks to the fountain’s creator, Tommaso Francini. He was the Intendant General of Waters and Fountains of the King. Francini brought Italian Renaissance garden design to France, creating an oasis of beauty. Originally, the Medici Fountain nestled against the Orangerie wall. Two nymphs, sculpted by Pierre Biard, graced its top, pouring water from pitchers. But time took its toll. By the 19th century, the fountain decayed, its nymphs vanished. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered a restoration in 1811, led by architect Jean Chalgrin. Chalgrin, known for the Arc de Triomphe, added a Venus statue to the grotto’s niche. Later, during Haussmann’s Parisian transformation, the Medici Fountain faced relocation. Alphonse de Gisors moved it thirty meters. He redesigned its setting, adding a long basin and replacing the lost nymphs with statues representing the Rhone and Seine rivers. The Fountain of Leda, another Parisian treasure, found a new home behind the Medici Fountain. The grotto niche received a new centerpiece. Auguste Ottin’s sculpture depicts the mythical Polyphemus discovering the lovers Acis and Galatea. Today, the Medici Fountain stands as a testament to its rich history.
