“Balance” is the word that comes to mind. This word perfectly describes the essence of the Fontaine Marta Pan. Here we stand before this unique fountain in Paris. It is not just a water feature. It is a statement of artistic vision and a testament to Marta Pan’s genius.

Marta Pan was not French by birth. She was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1923. Later, she moved to Paris in 1947. She became a French citizen in 1952. Paris became her adopted home.

Pan’s work often explores geometric simplicity. She explores themes of balance and equilibrium. The Fontaine Marta Pan is a prime example of these themes. Pan’s sculptures are sensitive to their surroundings. They respond to the landscape and subtle changes in light. Wind and water also play a role. Even the architecture around it influences her work.

Her marriage to André Wogenscky influenced her early work. Wogenscky was Le Corbusier’s main assistant. Maurice Béjart even created a ballet around her piece “Le Teck”. It premiered on the roof of Le Corbusier’s Unité in Marseille. She then created Floating Sculptures. They reflected the depth of architecture’s influence on her. The balanced and meditative qualities of her work are appreciated worldwide.

Marta Pan met Constantin Brâncuși in Paris. She met him at his studio. Later she met Le Corbusier and her future husband, André Wogenscky.

In 1952, Pan had her first solo exhibition. Here she presented her Charnières cycle. These sculptures feature interlocking elements. The shapes were pure and flexible. She learned to work with wood. In 1954, she presented Ebène, Buis, and Phillipine. In 1956, she presented Teck. It was an articulable sculpture in two pivoting parts. Maurice Béjart was struck by the work’s dreamlike quality. He created a ballet based on the sculpture. It was presented at the avant-garde festival in Marseille in 1956. Teck culminated this first Charnières cycle. It dealt with the duality of independent elements. These elements find their meaning in complementarity.

The Fontaine Marta Pan stands as a testament to her vision. Marta Pan died in 2008. Her legacy lives on through her many works around the world. Her sculptures can be found in Europe, the United States, Japan, and the Middle East.

Consider the water. It is an essential element in many of Marta Pan’s works. She created floating sculptures and water walls. The Fontaine Marta Pan embodies her connection to water. It invites us to reflect on the interplay of form and fluidity.
