Can you believe that this quiet corner in the heart of Paris, where the Fontaine de la Croix du Trahoir stands today, was once a place of public executions? It’s hard to imagine now, with its serene atmosphere. But the fountain, as it sits here, is a silent witness to centuries of history, a reminder of a time when the square was a place of fear and brutality. The Fontaine de la Croix du Trahoir is a little-known gem in Paris, nestled right on the corner of rue Saint-Honoré and rue de l’Arbre-Sec. It’s a beautiful fountain, built in 1775, and adorned with a nymph sculpted by Louis Boizot. But its history is much older than its current form.

The fountain’s name, which translates to “Fountain of the Cross of the Drawer,” refers to the place where merchants used to lay out their fabrics for sale on the square. And while the fountain itself has been rebuilt and redesigned several times, its location has remained the same. It was here on this very spot that false-coiners were boiled, and Lutherans were burnt at the stake. And until 1739, the ears of unworthy servants were cut off in public. It seems a far cry from the cheerful scene we see before us today.

The fountain was also mentioned in Victor Hugo’s famous novel, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” And it was just minutes before King Henri IV was assassinated in 1610, that he passed by the fountain on his way to rue de la Ferronnerie. And if you look closely at the fountain, you might notice a plaque that mentions that Louis XVI ordered the repairs to the “water tower of Julian’s Arch.” This water tower was in fact a very important part of the Parisian water system in the 18th century, supplying water to the nearby Palais-Royal and the homes of government ministers.

Today, the fountain is a reminder of the brutal past and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, reminding us that even in the darkest of times, beauty and peace can prevail. It’s a place of reflection, a place to pause and consider the history that surrounds us. As you stand before the Fontaine de la Croix du Trahoir, take a moment to imagine the different people and events that have passed through this very spot. This small fountain is, in its own quiet way, a window to the rich and complex past of Paris and its people.
