“Imagine a space born from tragedy, now a haven of green.” That’s Folkestone Gardens, a place of peace in Deptford. It is a place that whispers stories of resilience.

Folkestone Gardens is a small urban park in south-east London. It’s part of the London Borough of Lewisham. The gardens offer a tranquil escape from city life.

This park wasn’t always a green space. This land was once a densely populated residential area. During World War II, tragedy struck. On March 7, 1945, a V-2 rocket devastated the area. Over 50 lives were lost in the blink of an eye.

In the late 1960s, the area was cleared. From the late 60s until the early 70s, the transformation began. The park was laid out over part of Folkestone Gardens and Oareboro Road. Oareboro Road was an L-shaped street of terraced houses.

Today, Folkestone Gardens spans about 2.25 hectares. That’s around 6 acres of green space. It sits adjacent to Trundleys Road on the western side. Rolt Street borders it to the south. To the north, it includes part of the former Grand Surrey Canal.

Railway lines define the northern and eastern boundaries of Folkestone Gardens. This includes a viaduct of the London and Greenwich Railway. It was the first railway in London built for passengers. The first to be elevated, too.

The landscape here is intentionally undulating. Walkways weave through woodland areas. A large pond sits on the north-western side. In the pond, you can see an island with a weeping willow. Pond-side plants thrive, some from Blackheath’s Hare and Billet pond. Look for Lombardy poplars and sycamores as well. The park supports a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Folkestone Gardens has several facilities for visitors. There’s a children’s play area for the little ones. You can also find a ball court. A concrete skate park provides space for skating enthusiasts. The skate park’s construction caused some local controversy. The council funded it but initially not the play area. Safety concerns around the skate park have been raised.

If you need a break, stop by the restaurant and wine bar within the park. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The Quietway 1 cycle route passes through Folkestone Gardens. It provides a safe, calm path for cyclists.

Folkestone Gardens is more than just a park. It is a place of remembrance. It’s a testament to community resilience. This green space offers a peaceful retreat. Take a moment to reflect on its history. Enjoy the beauty that has risen from the ashes.
