Ever wondered what happens when a church finds a new soul? Welcome to Folkehuset Absalon in Copenhagen.
Folkehuset Absalon isn’t just any community center. It’s a vibrant hub nestled in the heart of Vesterbro. It breathes new life into the former Absalon’s Church. This building with its red brick facade and modest spire has a captivating past. In 2014 it ceased being a traditional church. Its former congregation moved to Enghave Kirke. But the story doesn’t end there.
Enter Lennart Lajboschitz. This entrepreneur known for the Flying Tiger Copenhagen chain saw more than just bricks and mortar. He invested over 10 million Danish krone. His vision was to transform this space into a lively community center. Folkehuset Absalon opened its doors in August 2015.
Now a haven for locals and visitors alike Folkehuset Absalon pulsates with activity. Every evening communal dinners take place. People gather at long tables. They share food and conversation. The atmosphere is homely. It’s a place where laughter and community thrive. It’s also a place for many other activities. From yoga classes to concerts to backgammon tournaments. There is always something happening. Even Danish lessons and baby rhythmics are offered.
The colors inside are a striking contrast to the outside. They were chosen by the artist Tal R. The furniture evokes a sense of nostalgia. It’s designed to create an intimate atmosphere within the high-ceilinged space. The original acoustics weren’t ideal for informal gatherings. Black-painted Troldtekt acoustic panels were added. They were installed on the ceiling and under the gallery. This improvement made the space more suitable for the many activities held daily.
Folkehuset Absalon received accolades for its unique transformation. The Danish Association of Architects recognized its innovative design. The project was lauded for its community focus. The communal dinner concept even earned a diploma from the Danish Gastronomic Academy.
More than just a community center Folkehuset Absalon is a testament to transformation and community spirit. It shows how a space can be reimagined. It is a place that nurtures social connections. Step inside and feel the warmth of this unique Copenhagen gem.
