Gazing up at the striking facade of FOLA, one might wonder about the stories it holds. FOLA, the Fototeca Latinoamericana, is a vibrant hub of photographic artistry in the heart of Buenos Aires. It first opened its doors in October 2015, founded by Gastón Deleau. FOLA boasts an impressive collection of over 300 works by roughly 130 Latin American artists from 12 different countries. This makes it a significant cultural institution dedicated to showcasing the rich tapestry of Latin American photography. The expansive 1200 square meter space houses three exhibition halls, an auditorium, and a specialized bookstore filled with photography books and unique objects. FOLA isn’t just about static displays. It’s a dynamic platform for dialogue and exchange between artists worldwide. FOLA fosters national and international projects, including exhibitions, awards, publications, festivals, workshops, and portfolio reviews. Some of the most renowned exhibitions hosted by FOLA have featured works by iconic photographers like Graciela Iturbide, Alberto García Alix, Vivian Maier, and Chema Madoz. The Fototeca Latinoamericana also hosted “Proyecto Mundo Futbol” and “Vintage Master”. This featured works from the Throckmorton Collection and the Sara Facio Collection, along with “Frida, by Leo Matiz.” FOLA also had a mobile museum that toured 25 Argentinian cities, demonstrating its commitment to bringing art closer to the public. This museum on wheels housed photos from more than 50 photographers, including works by those who donated pieces specifically for the mobile project. The mobile museum, a collaborative effort between FOLA and Arte x Arte, even incorporated augmented reality displays, accessible via QR codes on the trailer’s exterior.
