Stepping into serenity. That’s the feeling that washes over you as you stand before the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Buenos Aires. Nestled within the vibrant heart of Chinatown, this Buddhist temple offers a tranquil escape. Fo Guang Shan isn’t just a temple. It’s a beacon of the Humanistic Buddhism movement in Argentina. The story of Fo Guang Shan begins in 1992. Venerable Master Hsing Yun brought Humanistic Buddhism to Argentina, planting a seed that would blossom into this beautiful temple. The following year saw the creation of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA). This global organization, with over 200 locations worldwide, needed a home in Latin America. In 1996, a generous donation by Chang Sheng-Kai at a BLIA meeting in Paris made it possible. He donated land for a two-story building, totaling one thousand square meters. This became the future site of Fo Guang Shan Argentina, officially opening its doors on January 1, 1997. The temple underwent a significant reconstruction between 2007 and May 2008. The revitalized Fo Guang Shan now boasts not only a solemn altar. It also has classrooms, a tea room, a translation center, a meditation hall, an outdoor meditation area, and the Avalokiteshvara Wishing Fountain. The temple offers a diverse range of courses. These include Buddhism, meditation, Tai Chi, Chi Kung, yoga, vegetarian cooking, Chinese language, Kung Fu, and children’s yoga. As you approach the entrance, a sign displays four guiding principles: “Give confidence. Give hope. Give joy. Give ease.” Inside, you’ll encounter the Happy Buddha, a symbol of joy and good fortune. It is believed that by sharing your worries with the Happy Buddha, you receive happiness in return. Colorful slips of paper adorn the temple. These papers contain inspiring words from wise poets. Upon entering, take an incense stick, hold it between your eyes, and offer a smoky greeting to the Buddha. Then, place the stick back in its container. Inside, three bows show respect to the Buddha. You’ll see various images, including Buddha Sakiamuni. He was a prince who left his wealth to seek spiritual enlightenment. A wooden fish symbolizes the Buddhist belief that practitioners should be “awake as fish.” The rhythmic striking of the wooden fish guides the chanting of the Sutra. A gong, drum, and bells are played to signal the start of the ceremony, invoking blessings upon those present. Fo Guang Shan also houses a translation center. This center translates Buddhist texts into Spanish. This makes Buddhist teachings more accessible to the local community. This dedication to sharing the Dharma has resulted in the translation of over 30 books. Fo Guang Shan also established the Fo Guang School of Chinese Language. This school offers dynamic Chinese language education. It emphasizes ethical and moral foundations, enriching the learning experience for students and parents.
