Doesn’t the name Flying Cloud Airport evoke a sense of soaring freedom? This airport in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, wasn’t always the bustling hub it is today. Its origins are surprisingly humble.

Back in 1941, during World War II, the U.S. Navy needed a place to train pilots. They struck a deal with a local farmer named Martin “Pappy” Grill. His grass landing strip became a makeshift training ground. Pilots from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport would practice their approaches here.

After the war, Grill sold the land to American Aviation, Inc. John Stuber, with a nod to local Native American lore and the spirit of aviation, named it Flying Cloud Airport. In 1948, the Metropolitan Airports Commission stepped in and bought the airport, paving the runway and setting the stage for its future.

By 1966, Flying Cloud was the second-busiest airport in the central United States. Only Chicago’s O’Hare saw more traffic. In 1968, it ranked ninth nationwide in takeoffs and landings. Today, Flying Cloud Airport serves as a reliever airport. This means it helps to ease congestion at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. There are restrictions: aircraft are limited to 60,000 pounds, except in emergencies or for U.S. government operations.

Fun fact: Valleyfair amusement park is nearby. FAA regulations restrict the height of the park’s rides. This is because of the airport’s proximity.

Flying Cloud Airport covers 543 acres. It boasts three asphalt runways. In 2022, the airport recorded 122,281 aircraft operations. That’s an average of 335 per day. Most of that traffic, 96%, is general aviation.

You’ll find a mix of aircraft here: single-engine planes, multi-engine planes, jets, and helicopters. Viking Composite Squadron, a Civil Air Patrol unit, even has its hangar here at Flying Cloud Airport.

Flying Cloud Airport is more than just a place for planes to take off and land. It’s a vital part of the local economy. It generates millions in revenue and supports hundreds of jobs. The annual AirExpo is a major draw. People come from all over to see vintage military aircraft and meet veterans. The Wings of the North Museum offers a year-round attraction with its collection of antique aircraft.

Flying Cloud Airport began with a farmer’s field and a wartime need. It has grown into a key aviation hub. It supports the community and connects people. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a busy reliever airport, Flying Cloud’s story is one of growth, adaptation, and the enduring allure of flight.
