Could a monument honor the world’s first aerial circumnavigation? It does. Here we are at the Flyers Sculpture. It stands as a tribute to a groundbreaking moment in aviation history. This monument commemorates the U.S. Army officers who dared to cross the Earth by air.

Let’s step back in time to appreciate the full scope of this incredible feat. The former Naval Air Station Seattle once stood here. Warren G. Magnuson Park now occupies the site. This location served as the starting and ending point for the world’s first aerial circumnavigation. The adventure began on April 6, 1924. Four aircraft set off from this very spot, bound for Alaska. They were named Seattle, Chicago, Boston, and New Orleans.

Tragedy struck early in the journey. The Seattle encountered engine trouble in Alaska and was forced to drop out. The remaining three aircraft pressed on, their sights set on distant lands. Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, French Indochina, Thailand, Burma, and India awaited them. They continued to the Middle East and Europe. Mechanical issues plagued the journey. Despite these challenges, all three planes reached the Atlantic Ocean. The Boston was forced down into the sea.

The Chicago and the New Orleans bravely continued their flight. They journeyed by way of Iceland and Greenland. In Nova Scotia, the crew of the Boston rejoined the expedition. They were aboard a new plane called the Boston II. The planes made a stop in Washington D.C. and 14 other cities around the United States. Finally, they returned to Naval Station Puget Sound in Seattle on September 28, 1924.

The Flyers Sculpture itself is a sight to behold. It features a pair of bronze bird wings. These wings sit atop a tapering concrete tower. The design symbolizes the soaring spirit of those pioneering aviators.

Now, you might be wondering why this flight isn’t more widely celebrated. Charles Lindbergh often receives the spotlight for a similar achievement. However, the Flyers Sculpture reminds us of that first journey. It honors the brave men who first conquered the skies around the world. This monument ensures their place in history is not forgotten.

Take a moment to appreciate the sculpture’s details. Consider the courage and determination of those early aviators. They faced countless challenges. They pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible. Their journey represents a pivotal moment in aviation history.

The Flyers Sculpture stands as a testament to human ingenuity and bravery. It reminds us that even the most ambitious dreams can be realized with perseverance and daring. So, as you stand before this monument, let your imagination take flight. Picture those brave pilots soaring through the skies, forever etched in history. Their legacy lives on through this impressive work of art. It’s a fitting tribute to their extraordinary achievement.
