Glancing around London Fields, one cannot miss the vibrant Flower Sellers Sculpture. This mosaic sculpture tells a story of local history and artistic collaboration. It stands as a colorful landmark reflecting the spirit of Hackney.

The Flower Sellers Sculpture wasn’t always here. Let’s journey back to the 1980s. A group of local artists named Freeform Arts Trust joined forces with local school children. Together, they created this unique piece of public art.

Imagine the excitement of those children. Each carefully placing mosaic tiles to form this sculpture. Their creation depicts flower sellers. These sellers are surrounded by images of produce and grazing sheep.

The intricate mosaic patterns reflect the goods sold at Broadway Market. Much of that produce is still available today. The sheep surrounding the figures remind us of the area’s past. It used to be a grazing area for animals. These animals were on their way to Smithfields Meat Market.

For over 30 years, the Flower Sellers Sculpture stood watch over London Fields. However, the elements took their toll. Rain, wind, and sun faded its colors. Cracks appeared in the mosaic.

Earlier this year, Hackney Council stepped in. They hired mosaic artist Tamara Froud to restore the sculpture. Tamara, from MosaicAllsorts, carefully repaired the damage. She brought the Flower Sellers Sculpture back to life.

Now, the Flower Sellers Sculpture shines once more. Its vibrant colors and intricate details captivate visitors. People sit around it. They admire the artistry. They reflect on the history it represents.

Deputy Mayor Feryal Demirci encourages everyone to visit. She wants people to appreciate the flowers and fruits hidden within the design. The raised beds around the sculpture will soon be planted. This will add even more color to the scene.

The Flower Sellers Sculpture embodies community spirit. It showcases local artistry. It preserves a piece of Hackney’s history. It is a testament to the power of collaboration. It serves as a reminder of the area’s agricultural past.

Next time you’re in London Fields, take a closer look. Admire the intricate details. Appreciate the story behind this vibrant sculpture. Share your snaps and stories on social media. Tag @HackneyCouncil. Let’s celebrate this beloved piece of public art together.
