Florence Nightingale significantly raised the standard of nursing. Before her, anyone could call themselves a nurse. She transformed nursing into a respected profession. Admirers raised money to found the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses. It was established at St Thomas’s Hospital in London in 1860.

In 1860, she published Notes on Nursing. She wrote that the purpose of nursing is to put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him.

Florence Nightingale was also a pioneer in statistics. She used data to improve public health. She used pie charts to visualize data. She was a member of the Royal Statistical Society. She also belonged to the London Epidemiological Society.

She spent her final years as a housebound invalid. She may have suffered from brucellosis. In 1907, she became the first woman admitted to the Order of Merit. She died at her home in Mayfair. She was 90 years old.
