The Floral Tea Mansion initially belonged to Tuan Abdul Wabab a local Malay. However its most famous resident was Mr Tan Chong Keat who purchased it in the early 1900s. Generations of his family lived within its walls sometimes three or four families sharing the space. Imagine the lively conversations the shared laughter the family history woven into the very fabric of this house.

The mansion’s name Rumah Teh Bunga literally translates to Floral Tea Mansion. This name comes from its beautiful ochre hue a color reminiscent of blooming flowers and fragrant tea leaves. The design is a remarkable fusion of styles. It combines the pyramidal roof of a traditional Malay house with Chinese and European elements. The star and crescent moon on its facade represent Islam the religion of its original owner. Notice the exquisite floral motifs surrounding the symbols. They are a testament to the mansion’s elegant design.

The Floral Tea Mansion was meticulously restored in 2009 by the National Heritage Department. It involved painstaking work to preserve its original character. The restoration preserved the original tiles. The stables are now a modern garage demonstrating how 19th-century lifestyles adapt to the 21st century. The mansion is divided into distinct sections. These include the main house a connecting kitchen block and a separate garage. Each space tells a story of family life work and tradition.

For a time it served as the Penang Malay Heritage Gallery. It showcases the unique blend of cultures in this vibrant part of Malaysia. Today it is a testament to preserving history and celebrating heritage.
