Ever seen a deer sprout flowers? At the FlipBooks Sculpture you can. Right here on the Interurban Trail in Seattle’s Broadview-Bitterlake neighborhood. This isn’t your average roadside attraction. FlipBooks is a series of five whimsical “flip books” created by Seattle artist Jennifer Dixon. Imagine larger-than-life pages stretching along the trail. Each one tells a unique story.

Commissioned with Seattle Department of Transportation funds in 2008 FlipBooks is more than just art. It’s an interactive experience. As you bike or walk you witness a progression of colorful images. A jelly bean volcano erupts. A child blows a giant bubble. These aren’t static pictures. They’re animations brought to life by your movement. You become part of the artwork itself. The artist drew inspiration from old Burma Shave signs along the original Interurban Trail. Dixon wanted to create a continuous larger-than-life animation. One that would engage trail users. She succeeded brilliantly.

FlipBooks is constructed from aluminum MacTac vinyl and galvanized steel. It’s a testament to both artistic vision and public art’s ability to transform everyday spaces. The five storylines each about 150 feet long celebrate the journey along the trail. They feature scenes of the Pacific Northwest’s natural wonders. A blossoming tree. A fish swimming in a river. All presented in a vibrant and playful style. Each section stands about 8 feet high and extends 18 to 24 inches wide.

More than just pretty pictures FlipBooks encourages interaction. It invites you to slow down and appreciate the journey. To experience a sense of movement and play. It’s art that’s alive and responsive. It changes depending on your perspective. Whether you’re walking running or cycling. You become an active participant in a unique artistic experience.

So next time you’re on the Interurban Trail take a moment to appreciate the magic of FlipBooks. Experience the playful animations. Let the artwork transport you. It’s a delightful surprise waiting to be discovered. A unique testament to Seattle’s thriving art scene. A reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places. And above all else it’s a fun and engaging experience for people of all ages.
