“A leading center of Islamist radicalization” That’s how some describe Fleury-Mérogis. But Fleury-Mérogis is more than just a notorious prison. It’s Europe’s largest prison. The prison’s history is marked by events both large and small. In 1981 a major revolt erupted among the Corsican inmates. They demanded the release of prominent Corsican leaders. This event highlighted the tensions and unrest that can simmer within such a large institution.
The prison has security measures to prevent escape. Wire at the top of the building deters helicopter escapes. Fleury-Mérogis is overcrowded. Operating at 143% capacity. Despite the overcrowding it’s less congested than some other French prisons. It’s a constant balancing act. Managing a population of this size while maintaining security is a monumental challenge.
