“Sons of Liberty” is more than just a name. It echoes through Savannah’s history at the Flame of Freedom. This very spot was once Liberty Square. It was designed back in 1799 during the city’s second expansion.
Liberty Square got its name to honor the brave “Sons of Liberty”. This secret group stood against British rule during the American Revolution. But sadly Liberty Square is now one of the lost squares. Urban development erased its original form. The Chatham County Courthouse and the Robbie Robinson Parking Garage now stand where it once was.
The “Sons of Liberty” played a key role in Georgia joining the American Revolution. Before the famous Boston Tea Party in 1773, the Savannah Sons of Liberty were busy. They secretly shipped ammunition to Boston after raiding British sites. After the war Savannah was struggling. The Boston Sons of Liberty returned the favor by sending much needed food to Savannah.
The Sons of Liberty met in Savannah at Tondee’s Tavern on August 10th 1774. Here they planned their part in the American Revolution. The Flame of Freedom now marks this historic ground. It was moved here from Elbert Square in 1985. Today a small patch of grass reminds us of Liberty Square’s past.
Take a moment to reflect on Robert E. Robinson. The Robbie Robinson Garage is named in his honor. He was a city alderman and a civil rights attorney. Robinson was among the first 12 black students to integrate Savannah High in 1963. Tragically he was killed by a mail bomb in 1989.
Across the street you can see an interesting building. It has Moorish-style domes topped with a Star of David. This building is now the SCAD Student Center. Originally it was a synagogue for the Congregation B’nai B’rith. It even served as Saint Andrews Independent Episcopal Church. Savannah College of Art and Design acquired it in 2003.
The Flame of Freedom stands as a symbol of liberty and resilience. It reminds us of the sacrifices made for freedom. It stands as a beacon of hope. The Sons of Liberty risked everything for their beliefs. Their actions helped shape the course of American history. Take a moment here to honor their memory. Remember their dedication to freedom. Let the Flame of Freedom inspire you.
