Can you feel it? This is more than just a place. This is the Flak-Stellung. It echoes with the stories of a city under siege during World War II. Bremerhaven, vital Kriegsmarine support point, endured relentless Allied air raids.

Imagine the sky ablaze. Imagine the ground trembling. The Flak-Stellung was a key part of the city’s air defense. It was built to protect Bremerhaven. Over 1200 people in Bremerhaven died due to air attacks during the war.

Bremerhaven became a crucial target. It was an important hub for goods. The Allies aimed to cripple these logistics early in the war. Later, they spared the port facilities. The US Army needed them. They would use them to supply their troops after the war. Bremen and Bremerhaven became an American enclave. This was within the British Zone.

The constant threat from above led to a flak belt. It encircled the entire city. As a Kriegsmarine hub, naval flak units manned Bremerhaven’s air defenses.

The eastern sector included the Weddewarden flak sub-group. It had 10.5 cm flak guns. These were stationed near Wremen. They were also at Fort Brinkamahof II and Spaden. 12.8 cm guns stood ready at Langen and Schiffdorf.

The western sector was covered by the Grebswarden flak sub-group. This group had 10.5 cm flak at Fort Langlütjen I. More guns stood near Ellwürden. Grebswarden and Stotel boasted 12.8 cm guns.

As the war neared its end, the Flak-Stellung adapted. It integrated into ground defenses. From the autumn of 1944, a defense belt arose. It featured reinforced infantry positions. This was mainly in the city’s northern area. It formed part of the “Friesenwall”. The city was to become the “Marinefestung Wesermünde”.

Today, some buildings still stand. Those converted for housing remain largely intact. They serve as silent reminders. They remind of the Flak-Stellung’s vital role.

Consider Fort Langlütjen I. It features gun emplacements. These concrete remnants marked significant locations. They reflect the intensity of wartime defense.

So, as you stand here at the Flak-Stellung, remember its purpose. It defended Bremerhaven from the skies. It is a testament to resilience. It is a story etched in concrete and memory.
