Could a power plant be a cathedral? At Fisk Generating Station, that’s exactly what it felt like. Fisk Generating Station, here in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, wasn’t just a place of industry. It was a symbol of innovation, a temple of power. Imagine Chicago in 1903. The city was booming, hungry for energy. The older Harrison Street Station was struggling to keep up. Then came Fisk, with its groundbreaking Unit 1. This massive 5,000-kilowatt steam turbo-generator, built by General Electric, was twice as powerful as any existing steam engine. It was a gamble. General Electric’s chairman, Charles A. Coffin, initially balked at the sheer size of the turbine requested by Samuel Insull, Chicago Edison’s chairman. A compromise was reached, with Chicago Edison assuming the financial risk. Insull confidently told Coffin, “I will make no claim against you…all you have to do is take the apparatus out and throw it in the junk pile.” The gamble paid off. Fisk Station’s Unit 1 was a triumph, doubling the energy efficiency of previous reciprocating units. The turbines spun ten times faster, were significantly lighter, and demanded less maintenance. The blades of this turbine were the first human-made objects to break the sound barrier. Fisk Generating Station had revolutionized power generation, making electricity more accessible, reliable, and affordable. In 1914, Fisk continued to push the boundaries of engineering. Horizontally shafted turbines were introduced, replacing the vertical units. This shift allowed for larger and faster turbines, further increasing the station’s capacity. The Fisk Generating Station wasn’t just about machinery. It was about the people who worked there. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) represented the workers at the station. In 2001, a strike and subsequent lockout highlighted the complex relationship between labor and management. The dispute, involving unfair labor practice charges and legal battles, lasted for years before a settlement was reached in 2008. Fisk operated until 2012 when it was decommissioned. The rise of natural gas-fired power and impending environmental regulations contributed to its closure. Its legacy, however, continues to resonate. Fisk Generating Station stands as a reminder of Chicago’s industrial might and innovative spirit. A stark contrast to the art-filled Tate Modern in London, perhaps, but a testament to the power that once flowed from this now silent cathedral of industry.
