Did Firuzağa Camisi always stand here, amidst the bustling heart of Istanbul? No. Let’s journey back to 1490. Picture Firuzağa Camisi, newly built by Firuz Ağa, head treasurer to Sultan Bayezid II. This mosque, nestled on Divanyolu, the main street of the city, wasn’t always the serene space you see now. Firuzağa Camisi, as recorded on the inscription above its door, was a gift from Firuz Ağa. It was completed in 1491. He didn’t just build the mosque. He established a muallimhane (teachers’ lodge) next to Firuzağa Camisi. He also endowed a madrasa in Havza and fountains in Semendire Fortress and Saray. His dedication extended beyond Istanbul. He bequeathed numerous properties and villages throughout Rumelia and Anatolia. Firuzağa Camisi, a classic example of the Bursa style, is more than just a mosque. It’s a time capsule. It reflects the architectural trends of the early Ottoman period. The original courtyard, much larger than what you see today, once housed wooden shops known as Firuzağa Çarşısı. These shops, sadly, perished in the Hocapaşa fire of 1865. The bustling marketplace disappeared when Divanyolu was widened. Another tragedy struck during the Alemdar Vakası uprising in 1808. Firuz Ağa’s tomb and a sıbyan mektebi (primary school) were destroyed. Firuzağa Camisi itself survived several disasters, including the earthquake of 1648, which damaged its minaret. Look closely at the minaret. It stands on the left side of the mosque, a unique feature. One story suggests this placement was meant to minimize disruption to the predominantly Greek population in the area during the early years after Constantinople’s conquest. The single-balconied minaret, with its short, faceted base, is an original part of the structure, not a later addition. Its slim profile and the subtle transition from the base to the shaft are hallmarks of early Ottoman minaret design. Firuzağa Camisi’s entrance, a wide, shallow arch crafted from alternating white and pink marble, stands as a testament to Ottoman artistry. Above the arch, an inscription written in Şeyh Hamdullah’s elegant script tells the story of the mosque’s creation. Inside, admire the mihrap (prayer niche), adorned with intricate mukarnas (stalactite) carvings. The dome, resting on an octagonal base, bathes the interior in soft light. The wooden minber (pulpit) and the main portion of the kürsü (lectern) have also stood the test of time. Firuzağa Camisi, though stripped of its surrounding buildings and its founder’s tomb, remains a jewel of Ottoman architecture. It stands as a testament to the generosity and vision of Firuz Ağa, a man who left an indelible mark on Istanbul’s landscape.
