“Can you feel it?” whispered a woman, clutching her worn Bible. “The very air here vibrates with faith.” We stand before the First United Pentecostal Church of Euless. It’s a place where the echoes of fervent prayer and spirited hymns still linger. While the current First United Pentecostal Church of Euless stands as a testament to modern faith, its roots trace back to a powerful religious awakening in the early 20th century. This spiritual fervor ignited in places like Topeka, Kansas, and the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles. It spread like wildfire, reaching East Texas with remarkable speed. One of the earliest communities touched by this revival was Livingston, Texas. Around 1913, a church in Livingston embraced this “New” Pentecostal experience with open arms. The congregation’s first services were held in the Old Providence School. Then, they moved to “Cottage Prayer Meetings” in members’ homes. A man known as “Uncle Matt” Collins generously opened his home, nurturing a burgeoning congregation of 40 to 50 souls. The church grew rapidly, holding revivals under brush arbors and in tents. In 1915, the community built its first permanent church, affectionately called “The Tabernacle”. Riley Young donated three acres of land on Highway 146 for the building. Without a baptistery, the congregation held baptisms in nearby ponds and Long King Creek. The church, later renamed “The First United Pentecostal Church of Livingston”, served the community until 1958. While the history we uncovered specifically details the First United Pentecostal Church of Livingston, it offers a glimpse into the broader Pentecostal movement that likely influenced the First United Pentecostal Church of Euless. The shared denomination and the emphasis on Pentecostal traditions suggest a connection. It’s possible that the fervor and growth experienced in Livingston mirrored the early days of the Euless church, driven by the same powerful spiritual awakening.
