In 1831, a small group of Methodists gathered in a humble home near where the Merchandise Mart now stands. This marked the birth of the First United Methodist Church of Chicago. They were pioneers of faith, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Chicago’s religious landscape. Little did they know their small congregation would one day reside in a soaring skyscraper, a testament to their enduring spirit. The First United Methodist Church of Chicago, fondly called the “Mother Church of Chicago Methodism,” has a rich history intertwined with the city’s growth. In 1834, they built a log cabin north of the Chicago River, their first dedicated house of worship. This cabin was later moved across the river, literally rolling it on logs to its present location at the intersection of Washington and Clark. The congregation continued to grow, necessitating larger spaces. A brick church with a spire was built in 1845, replaced in 1858 by a four-story multi-use building. This innovative approach, combining commercial space with religious facilities, helped fund the expansion of Methodism in the region. This building financed nearly 200 churches, and institutions like Northwestern University, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and Wesley Memorial Hospital. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 devastated much of the city, including the First United Methodist Church’s building. Yet, the congregation’s resolve remained unbroken. They chose to rebuild on the same site, affirming their commitment to the heart of Chicago. A temporary wooden chapel served their needs while a new multi-use structure was erected. This chapel was later moved and repurposed, even serving as a mosque in Wrigleyville, a testament to the spirit of adaptation and reuse. The First United Methodist Church of Chicago continued to evolve with the city, ultimately leading to the construction of the Chicago Temple Building in 1924. Designed by the renowned firm Holabird & Roche, this skyscraper church, at the time Chicago’s tallest building, became a symbol of the church’s ambition and the city’s progress. The building boasts three sanctuaries: the main sanctuary on the ground floor, the Dixon Chapel on the second floor, and the Sky Chapel, nestled beneath the steeple 400 feet above the city streets. The Sky Chapel, a gift from the Walgreens family, offers breathtaking views and a unique space for worship. Inside the main sanctuary, stained glass windows depict biblical scenes and local Chicago landmarks, a visual representation of the intertwining of faith and city life. The building’s mixed-use design continued, with office spaces from the fifth to the twenty-first floor. Among the tenants was famed lawyer Clarence Darrow, his office a quiet space amidst the bustling city. The First United Methodist Church of Chicago’s journey is a story of resilience, adaptation, and a deep commitment to the city of Chicago.
