Green Washington Minter…such a strong name for a man who helped shape the religious landscape of Tarrant County. This plaque, marking the First United Methodist Church Grapevine, tells a tale intertwined with his legacy. The church we see today, a beacon of faith in Grapevine, has roots stretching back to 1866. Imagine those early settlers, gathering for worship in homes, their faith as sturdy as the Grapevine soil beneath their feet. This Methodist community thrived. In fact, just a few miles away, another congregation, Minter’s Chapel, was already making history as the oldest Methodist-rooted group in the county, founded back in 1854. These two congregations, though worshipping separately, wove their stories into the rich tapestry of faith in this area. Years later, fate, in the form of DFW Airport construction, led Minter’s Chapel to relocate, eventually becoming Heritage United Methodist Church. However, the echoes of their presence remained in the Minter’s Chapel Cemetery, a silent testament to their enduring faith. Then, in 2009, a beautiful merging occurred. Heritage UMC and First UMC Grapevine joined hands and hearts, becoming a united force for good under the name First Grapevine Methodist Church. Their story, much like the faith they represent, reminds us that sometimes, the greatest strength comes from joining together, from honoring the past while embracing the future.
