Ever wondered how a church can stand strong for over 170 years? First United Methodist Church has done just that. It stands as a testament to faith in downtown Dallas.
First United Methodist Church has seen Dallas change. The neighborhood changed. Even the world around it changed. Yet, the church remains a strong presence in the Dallas Arts District.
Originally built in 1926, First United Methodist Church is a neo-Gothic facility. It serves as a gateway to the Dallas Arts District. The church has been renovated and added to many times. GFF has collaborated with the church since 2007 on multiple projects. These projects began with a building assessment. Then came a feasibility study and master plan. The plan focused on future growth and expansion.
The initial phase created a new gathering space. This space fills the original courtyard. Previously, a two-story classroom and office addition occupied it during the 1960s. Now, it’s a new heart for the church complex. The light-filled atrium connects different buildings. It links misaligned floor levels. It also simplifies flow and communication throughout the church. This atrium provides a point of orientation. Visitors can easily move through the space on multiple levels. For special events, the atrium can seat 250 people at community tables.
Modern detailing provides a contrast to the historic structure. New skylights wash the restored brick with daylight. Natural illumination returns to the original stained-glass windows of the sanctuary.
More recent projects maximized the efficiency of the original education wing. These projects restored historic beauty covered by a 1950s renovation. The space comprises 46000 square feet over four levels. It was large but outdated. It was also inefficiently used. Renovations included improvements to the Developmental Learning Center on the main floor. The interior layout of children’s and youth ministry spaces was reimagined. This made them more functional and efficient. The third-floor gym transformed into a more usable multi-purpose room. It now has audio/video capabilities. It is used for dinners, events, and alternative worship. The gym still supports recreation functions. The gym floor and ceiling were restored to their original condition. Church staff offices relocated from a neighboring building to the ground floor of the education wing.
Care was taken to honor the past. Modern efficiencies were added. New interior door frames, sidelights, and transoms were designed with wood trim. The trim matches the profiles of the original structure. Existing exterior windows blocked were restored. The design embraces high ceilings and natural light. It reveals itself as a contemporary intervention in a historic structure.
First United Methodist Church shares common beliefs with all Christians. They believe in the Trinity. God is described in three persons. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are commonly used. Sometimes they use other terms like Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. They believe in one God. He created the world. They believe that God is loving. We can experience God’s love and grace.
