Did you know that First United Lutheran Church in San Francisco wasn’t always located where it is today? This unassuming church has a rich and surprisingly complex history. Founded in 1886 as the Women’s Memorial Church it was the first Lutheran congregation in California to use English for worship. Can you imagine the excitement? Imagine the new community forming.

First United Lutheran Church started small. Thirty-nine members met in Irving Hall. They later moved to a beautiful stone building on Geary Boulevard. This structure miraculously survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. Repairs only cost about $3100. That’s a remarkable testament to its resilience and the generosity of east coast Lutherans.

The church moved again in 1944 to the Richmond District. They built a new sanctuary dedicated in 1950. Then in 1946 the congregation changed its name to First United Lutheran Church. The name reflects its growing role in the San Francisco community.

However First United’s story takes a dramatic turn. In 1990 the ELCA suspended then expelled First United for ordaining an openly gay pastor. This action defied the denomination’s rules. It was a courageous but controversial decision. The church faced expulsion. It became an independent congregation.

For many years First United functioned independently. It remained true to its inclusive values. It also experienced a period of separation from the larger church body. However in 2009 the ELCA changed its policy to allow openly gay clergy. This led to First United’s reconciliation and return to the denomination in 2012. This event was celebrated with a Service of Healing and Reconciliation.

Today First United Lutheran Church continues its mission. It’s a church without walls. It currently meets at St Cyprian’s Episcopal Church. First United’s story is one of faith resilience and the pursuit of inclusivity. It’s a powerful example of a congregation adapting to change while remaining true to its core values. It demonstrates its commitment to welcoming all within God’s family. This makes First United Lutheran Church a significant part of San Francisco’s religious landscape. Its history is a fascinating testament to its dedication and enduring faith.
