The address is sometimes listed as 4097 Vernon Ave. and other times as 5450 W. 41st St. The First Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church community moved to this location in November 1996, led by their pastor, Rev. Urii Maruschak. He’s a fascinating figure, originally from China, and fluent in five languages. Imagine hearing sermons delivered in Ukrainian by a pastor who also speaks Chinese, Russian, and English! The congregation itself reflects a vibrant mix of cultures. While about 90 percent of the 115 members are Ukrainian, the remaining 10 percent includes Russians and even some Moldavians. It’s a testament to the unifying power of faith. The First Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church, despite having about half its members being senior citizens, is surprisingly active for its size. Interestingly, there’s no paid office staff.
