Is there a more intriguing place than a church to uncover hidden stories? This, my friends, is the First Spiritualist Church of Austin. Established in 1926, this church has been a beacon for those seeking spiritual understanding and connection for almost a century. The First Spiritualist Church isn’t your typical house of worship. It holds a unique place in Austin’s history, attracting those drawn to Spiritualism. Reverend August Cervin, a Swedish immigrant, founded this church. His wife, Jennie, was a revered clairvoyant, healer, and ordained minister. Their shared passion for Spiritualism laid the foundation for this unique community. The First Spiritualist Church found its first home in the heart of Austin, at the old Labor Temple on 10th and Brazos. They even held services at the grand Driskill Hotel! Finally, in 1941, the congregation found its permanent sanctuary in the tranquil neighborhood of Hyde Park. Today, the First Spiritualist Church continues its legacy. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the human desire for connection beyond the veil.
