Envision a bustling San Francisco in 1849. Gold fever gripped the city. Yet amidst the chaos, a small group gathered. They established the First Baptist Church of San Francisco on July 6th. This act marked the beginning of Baptist ministry in California, even before it became a state. First Southen Baptist Church, as it is known today, shares a connected history with these early Baptist roots. Southern Baptists also recognized California’s importance. They included it in their mission field after their formation in 1845. Pastors from Alabama and Arkansas established churches in Santa Clara and El Monte in the early 1850s. This growth, however, was hampered by the Civil War. Funds dwindled and personnel retreated. Decades passed. Southern Baptist activity in California was revitalized on May 10, 1936. A small group of 16 members formed the First Baptist Church in Shafter. This marked a new beginning, focusing on the San Joaquin Valley. A significant milestone was reached on September 13, 1940. The Southern Baptist General Convention of California was established in Shafter. This laid the groundwork for the California Southern Baptist Convention. This organization now boasts over 2,200 congregations. It is one of the largest evangelical Protestant denominations in California. First Southen Baptist Church stands within this rich history of Baptist faith and growth in California.
