It witnessed the city’s growth from a humble settlement to a vibrant metropolis. Our story begins in 1843, in a time when Chicago was still finding its footing. A small group of German immigrants, yearning for a spiritual home, gathered in a grocery store. It was during a blizzard, imagine that, a furious blizzard swirling outside, that the seeds of First Saint Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church were sown. They chose the name ‘Saint Paul’ and set about building their sanctuary. The city’s first mayor, William B. Ogden, gifted them land at LaSalle and Ohio Streets. Picture marshland and muddy paths, a stark contrast to today’s cityscape. The determined group built a modest structure, completed in 1844. The church, a beacon of faith, grew with the city. Tragedy struck in 1871. The Great Chicago Fire, a raging inferno, consumed much of Chicago, including First Saint Paul’s. Pastor Heinrich Wunder, in a remarkable act of bravery, saved vital church records from the flames. Rebuilt with support from the Missouri Synod, First Saint Paul’s rose again, a testament to resilience. Over time, First Saint Paul’s moved, adapted, and thrived, its story intertwined with Chicago’s own. The church we see today, with its unique curvilinear design, was dedicated in 1970.
