“First Pilgrims Holiness Church”, a name steeped in history, stands before you. It’s a testament to a movement that swept across America in the late 19th century, seeking a return to scriptural holiness. Imagine the fervent atmosphere of those early days, when people gathered in homes and public halls, their voices raised in yearning for a deeper connection with God. This church, born from that fervor, was once called “International Holiness Union and Prayer League” in 1897. It was founded by two men, Martin Wells Knapp and Seth C. Rees, both of whom were passionate about spreading the message of holiness and evangelism. The founders were a Methodist and a Quaker, and it’s fascinating to imagine the theological bridge they built to create this holiness movement. Interestingly, the church went through several name changes – “International Apostolic Holiness Union and Churches”, then “International Apostolic Holiness Church” – before finally adopting the name “First Pilgrims Holiness Church” in 1922. The “pilgrims” in the name represent a journey towards spiritual growth and transformation. The church grew rapidly and even had a missionary branch – members were spreading the Gospel to far-off places like South Africa, India, and Japan. Over time, it merged with other holiness organizations, becoming the Pilgrim Holiness Church, then ultimately merging with the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1968 to form the Wesleyan Church. So, the church you see today represents a legacy of spiritual fervor, theological fusion, and a global commitment to holiness.
