A haven of healing. That’s the First Nations Community Garden. It’s more than just plants and soil. It’s a place of cultural revival a space where history takes root.

Established in the spring of 2019 the First Nations Garden also known as Wiinso Wiikonge Otishinikaaso is a testament to community organizing. The Chi-Nations Youth Council spearheaded this effort with support from Alderman Carlos Rosa. They partnered with Neighborspace to ensure the garden’s long-term sustainability. The English name First Nations Garden was deliberately chosen. It underscores the deep ancestral connection between Indigenous peoples and the land.

The garden is much more than a place to grow food. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s a place of cultural education and healing for Chicago’s First Nations communities. You’ll find independent plots where community members cultivate their own plants. There are also hinged hoop houses. These houses grow culturally significant prairie sage sweetgrass and strawberries. These plants have historical significance in traditional medicine. The circular raised beds too are carefully tended. They’ve yielded midewiwin tobacco white buffalo cafe tobacco and various medicinal herbs.

The First Nations Outdoor Gallery established in 2020 adds another layer to this place. Twelve murals adorn the west fence. They showcase the diversity of Chicago’s art scene and the interwoven experiences of BIPOC communities. The garden’s impact extends beyond its physical boundaries. Native Sundays provide a social gathering space for Chicago’s Native community fostering collaboration healing and representation.

A pivotal decision was made. The American Indian Center was removed from the garden’s management team in 2019. This decision reflected the council’s commitment to creating a space free of anti-Blackness homophobia and other forms of discrimination. The First Nations Garden is now under Neighborspace’s urban land trust managed by the Chi-Nations Youth Council. It’s a place where the past present and future intertwine. It’s a place where Indigenous culture flourishes. It’s a garden with a powerful story. This is a place of healing a space of cultural pride. This is the First Nations Community Garden.
