The town of Hutchins was formed in 1872 with the completion of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad. This plaque tells the story of the First Methodist Church of Hutchins, a congregation deeply rooted in the history of this community. In December of 1887, the Reverend John M. Davis and eight charter members founded the church. They initially met in a farmhouse owned by R. A. Simpson, and later shared facilities with the Christian Church of Hutchins. In 1891, a Methodist church was built on Main Street on land given by A. S. Clark. A new building was erected on Palestine Street in 1897. This church has served the community for more than 100 years. However, tragedy struck in 1916 when a fire destroyed the church building and a parsonage. The community rallied and rebuilt the church in 1917, proving its resilience and commitment to its faith. This marker stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the First Methodist Church of Hutchins, a beacon of faith and community in the heart of Texas.
