Eleven souls. That’s how it began. On July 30 1868 eleven people gathered to form First General Baptist Church in Dallas. They met in a Masonic Hall a far cry from the grand structure we see today. First General Baptist Church was born. It was a humble beginning. The congregation worked tirelessly. They built a Sunday school. They persevered through periods without a pastor. Their faith was their strength.

Early pastors served with dedication. W W Harris was the first. He served for only six months. Elder C A Stanton followed. He served until May 12 1872. Then came Abraham Weaver. He received a substantial salary $1000 a year. He served until September 25 1875. These men laid the foundation. They nurtured the growing congregation.

The church flourished. By 1892 membership had reached 643. By 1901 it had grown to over 1000. This rapid expansion was remarkable. It speaks to the power of their message and their community outreach. The congregation’s dedication led to the construction of a new church. In 1889 and 1890 they built a beautiful edifice. It was deemed large enough for generations to come. This was a testament to the congregation’s ambition and faith.

But the church’s growth continued. Soon even the new building proved too small. Under the leadership of Pastor George W Truett who started in 1897 the church experienced phenomenal growth. The congregation decided to build again. They constructed a massive new auditorium. It seated nearly 4000 people. It became the largest church auditorium in the entire state. It was a magnificent achievement. It reflects First General Baptist Church’s enduring influence.

The financial contributions mirrored the growth. In 1905 total collections reached $28675.09. By 1907 this figure soared to over $49000. This financial success was not just about money. It signified the congregation’s commitment and the profound impact of their faith. The Sunday school thrived too. Dr Bush Jones the superintendent guided the school to remarkable growth. In 1908 the enrollment topped 1300.
